Wonder Woman nominations and panel

On Tuesday, March 24, the Office of Career Development will host the Wonder Women panel from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Sales Institute of the Carl DeSantis building. The event is in partnership with the H. Wayne Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship and the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement and will feature a panel of five women who are considered wonder women in their field.

The panel will include Caitlin Beck Stella, the CEO of the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; Yolanda Cash Jackson, a shareholder at Becker and Poliakoff; Jennifer Cerami, the vice president of IDN sales for Medline Industries, Inc.; Ruth Llanos-Vos, the technical manager of Ultimate Software and Juliet Murphy Roulhac, the director of corporate external affairs for Florida Power and Light Company. The event, which is open to all NSU students, will provide an opportunity to learn from and network with the panelists.

Niemah Butler, the assistant director of employer relations in the Office of Career Development at NSU said, “These women are going to be here talking about their stories, how they [got] to be CEO’s, shareholders and [in] upper management positions… There is [also] a networking opportunity, so students will have the opportunity after the panel to network with the panelists. We have a series of questions that we gear to ask the panelists, so that students can get the most out of [the experience].”

The winner of the Wonder Women award will also be announced during the event. Nominations for the award can be submitted by NSU staff, faculty and students for individuals they feel embody the qualities of a wonder woman. Qualities for the award include leadership, academic excellence and career focus, community service, integrity and ethics and women’s empowerment. All students are eligible to be nominated for the award regardless of gender or identification.

“We are cognizant and aware of the populations at our university,” said Butler.

The winner of the award will receive a $500 scholarship in addition to recognition of his or her accomplishments at NSU.

Butler explained, “Students do amazing things at this university and this gives an incentive for organizations to nominate that top person. It gives us a way to spotlight some of our top students at the university.”

Last year’s winner, Oriana Lopez, said “It’s really refreshing to see all these different women from different fields [who] are amazing in whatever they do… Women tend to be minorities everywhere they go, but in this case, [at NSU], we aren’t. It’s nice to be able to reward [women] for the work that they are doing.”
