The Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM) is an international human rights movement campaigning against the violence and systematic racism that Black people endure.
As seen in recent events with the murder of George Floyd, BLM holds protests in an effort to speak out against police brutality and killings of those in the Black community. The movement also speaks of broader issues such as racial profiling and the racial inequality within the U.S. criminal justice system.
Founded by three queer women, the organization’s website, states BLM is “a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes [and] affirms the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum.”
What began as a “call to action in response to state-sanctioned violence and anti-Black racism,” according to the organization’s website, has become a globally recognized movement with many individuals voicing their support in an effort to end racism and support the Black community.
