Getting connected at NSU with eSharks

NSU has temporarily suspended Sharks on the Scene, a program to provide students access to exclusive discounted tickets to a variety of events occurring throughout South Florida, for this semester due to COVID-19. However, in its place, the Office of Campus Life and Student Engagement is offering a new program titled eSharks.

This new program aims to provide the same unique experience, but in a different format. All eShark events are primarily virtual experiences to provide NSU students with entertainment. Additionally, unlike Sharks on Scene, all of the eShark events are free to NSU students.

Christina Rajkumar-Castillo, associate director of the Office of Campus Life and Student Engagement, explained, “We are trying to figure out virtual opportunities that we can offer to our students to keep them engaged, especially in a time where students are craving that connection [to] the university and other NSU Sharks.”

January’s eShark events revolve around the theme of self-help in the new year. This month’s eShark experiences included events such as a digital vision board party, budgeting for college students, healthy smoothie making and more. Still to come this month is Declutter Your Space on Jan. 24 at 2 p.m., Sushi Making on Jan. 30 at 12 p.m. and Terrarium Workshop on Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.

“Being able to feel connected to other individuals right now is something that a lot of us are still trying to manage and maintain. In addition to that, it is very important for our students to still feel connected to the university. Creating these opportunities is extremely important because it is giving students an opportunity to do that,” said Rajkimar-Castillo

Additionally, this month features a special in-person event at the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center. The event will showcase Reza in the show Edge of Illusion, a world top touring illusionist, on Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. The performance will follow strict COVID-19 protocols to ensure the safety of its attendees.

Students should keep an eye out for future eShark scheduling on NSU’s SharkFins newsletter or the Shark Hub website, and those interested in RSVPing can do so by emailing specialprojects@nova.edu
