The Polar Boys: on new music, first singles and individual sound

The Polar Boys is a Miami-based band consisting of three members; Andy Zambrana, Alex Ramon and Andres Baquerizo. The three friends formed the group in 2017, releasing two tracks across several music platforms that year. The group has been growing, not only in experience, but in musical sound. If you like indie pop-rock and indie pop-punk, The Polar Boys are for you.

“We used to describe [our sound] as retro pop-rock, but the band has gone through quite the evolution of sound. At the beginning, we had a style quite like the Beach Boys. It was like pop-rock, you know?” said Ramon.

He went on to explain, “With our upcoming music — and we don’t want to spoil anything — but it’s definitely not pop-rock. I wouldn’t still describe it as retro pop-rock, but I would put it within the realm of indie pop-rock. It’s hard to really categorize it because it draws from a lot of different inspirations across a lot of genres. It really draws influences from everything.”

The Polar Boys plan to release their first official single on March 4, titled “Black Dog.” The song gets its namesake from Ace, a black dog, who belongs to a member of the band and is always around when they’re creating music. The single is a jazzy tribute to their funky canine friend.

The Polar Boys have even more upcoming music planned for release throughout 2021. It’s different from their previous tunes in both sound and content. Not only does their new music transcend genres, but it was created almost entirely in 2020 during the national pandemic.

“Sometimes, it is hard to pinpoint where it comes from when we write. It’s a collective sound of everything we listen to and love, and the collection of all of our individual experiences and feelings during all of this. It comes together to form our sort of signature eclectic Polar Boys sound,” said Ramon.

Their upcoming releases draw from not only different genres, but different generational trends of music.

“In this project, there’s a lot of derivatives from a lot of 90’s music, as far as melodies and harmonies go. For me, I can listen to part of a song and think, ‘Oh, that definitely sounds like something from the 90s.’ It just feels like with this new music, the project was jumping around, but not in a way that is separated. It isn’t separated into 60s, 70s and so on. It just feels like all of those sounds thrown into a bag and shaken,” said Zambrana.

“We drew from a lot of different inspirations and genres for ‘Black Dog.’ We really write however we feel, and all of our influences go into the music. Those influences go from the Bee Gees, to the Beatles, to even artists like Mac Miller. One of our biggest musical inspirations was definitely Daft Punk. It really is just a variety of sounds we like to incorporate,” said Baquerizo.

The Polar Boys should be on your radar if they aren’t already. They can be found on almost all music platforms. Be sure to keep an eye out on March 4 for their latest single, “Black Dog.”
