From March 22 to March 25, the Center for Academic and Professional Success (CAPS), in partnership with the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, Office of Undergraduate Research and all NSU colleges, will host the Recruit a Shark Virtual Career Expo. The event will be held virtually using the Remo platform in order to create flexible options for students.
Emilio Lorenzo, the associate director of employer relations at NSU, explained that the event provides students the opportunity to connect with employers and organizations in their specific industries.
“[Recruit a Shark Week] is a week filled with industry-specific career fairs. It’s a chance for students to find jobs, internships, research and volunteer positions. And since it is organized by industry, there is something there for everyone,” said Lorenzo.
The event is divided by industry, allowing students a more individualized career fair experience. The fairs included are for marine biology and environmental sciences, psychology, neuroscience, education and nonprofits; pre-health, exercise science and research; government, arts, and social sciences; business operations, mathematics and computing, as well as fairs for graduate and professional schools and occupational therapy.
A full list of the week’s events can be found on Handshake. By navigating to the career fair tab under events on the Handshake platform, students can access the links for the various career fairs and find information about the employers and organizations registered for each event.
Niemah Butler, the assistant director of employer relations encourages students to check out the list of employers to get a feel for what they are looking for as well as take advantage of the resources offered through CAPS to prepare for the fair.
This year, CAPS has also worked closely with the Undergraduate Student Government Association (USGA) in order to adjust the career fair to the needs of NSU Sharks.
Lorenzo explained, “We always take great pride in the caliber of employers we have, but having USGA representatives really having a hands-on role in giving us feedback as to who we have selected or accepted to be a part of each of our fairs has really made an impact because we get feedback.” He continued, “It’s not just CAPS, it is an NSU approach and we are working with the colleges to make sure we are inviting and gathering the right employers to make this event a success.”
