U.S. diplomat in Haiti resigns in light of treatment of Haitians at Texas board
According to NBC News, U.S. Special Envoy for Haiti Daniel Foote has resigned after 15,000 Haitian migrants were stopped at the Del Rio, Texas border. Foote shared that he is appalled at the inhumane treatment of Haitians on the boarder. “With deep disappointment and apologies to those seeking crucial changes, I resign from my position as Special Envoy for Haiti, effective immediately,” said Foote in his letter of resignation. He also went on to state that the policy approach to Haiti is deeply flawed.
Attack on the Taliban vehicle
On Sept. 22 Taliban vehicles were attacked leading to the death of two fighters and three civilians. According to ABC News, a gunman shot at a Taliban vehicle at a local gas station in Jalalabad. No one has officially taken responsibility for the attack. ABC News stated, “The Taliban and IS are enemies, and the attacks have raised the specter of wider conflict between the country’s new Taliban rulers and their long-time rivals.” Islamic State Group, (IS), had a similar attack last week on another Taliban vehicle that killed eight people.
Ukraine passes legislation limiting oligarchs
Ukraine passed a law that limits oligarchs influence on politics. According to ABC News, the Ukrainian legislation passed law that thoroughly defines an oligarch as, “individuals who own significant financial assets and media outlets and requires oligarchs to register as such.” Ukrainian has been under fire by its own citizens because of the amount of power oligarchs had. The reform is believed to have been influence after Ukranian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s, top aid was attacked by gunfire into their vehicle.
Polish Olympian auctions silver medal to raise money for boy’s heart surgery.
Polish Track and Field Olympian Maria Andrejczyk is auctioning her first Olympic medal in order to help raise money for a young boy’s heart survey. Andrejczyk won a silver medal at the Toyoko Olympics. The young boy has a heat defect and needs heart surgery. Only days after Andrejczyk won her medal she made an announcement on Facebook that she wanted to raise $190,000. Andrejczyk states, “Miloszek has a serious heart defect, he needs an operation…he already has a head start from Kubus — a boy who didn’t make it in time but whose amazing parents decided to pass on the funds they collected.”
