When one thinks of South Florida the first things that come to mind are the beaches and maybe theme parks. With holidays like Thanksgiving approaching, people are always looking for some fun places to visit with their families outside of the obvious tourist spots. This article gives you five fun, out-of-the-box places to go in South Florida, selected especially for broke college students and their visiting families.
Flamingo Gardens ($$)
If you are an animal lover and are looking for places to visit that are close and affordable, you will love Flamingo Gardens. The botanical garden is also an Everglades wildlife refuge where you can see not only flamingos but other animals such as sea otters, Florida panthers and alligators. There is also a café overlooking the Flamingo pond and other restaurants, all for $20 per adult.
Jaxon’s Ice Cream Parlor ($)
Jaxon’s Ice Cream Parlor is a thematic ice cream shop in Dania Beach that has been operating since 1956. Jaxon’s is famous for its giant sundaes and shop decorations that include rural American memorabilia. Don’t fret if you are not a very big fan of ice cream; the menu also includes burgers, salads and other dishes. However, the real highlight of this place is the homemade ice cream and milkshakes and sodas topped with real whipped cream.
Water Taxi ($$$)
This is not exactly a place, but more of an experience. If you are looking for a new way to get to know Fort Lauderdale, you may want to board the famous water taxis that go around “America’s Venice.” For $28, an adult can enjoy refreshments on the boat as well as visit the 11 stops along the 15-mile route. The water taxi also has a crew, who give tips on what to do around Fort Lauderdale and talk about the city’s history.
Venetian Pool ($$)
Right outside Miami and close to Coral Gables, this Venetian pool drains water from aquifers and artesian wells and is the perfect place to swim and cool off. It costs only $15 per adult, and it promises an amazing experience for people who are looking for some sun and some water but do not want to go to the beach.
Morikami Musem and Japanese Gardens ($$)
The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens are a great way to experience different cultures without going too far. The museum offers exhibitions, tea ceremonies, educational programs and Japanese festivals. Plus, visitors get to see Japanese architecture and the gardens that feature bonsai collections and other wildlife from Japan. There are also picnic areas and nature trails, which are perfect for spending time with family while appreciating a different culture.
