FIFA soccer 12 review: Qué gólazo

If I never write another article for The Current, it’s because I’ll be too busy playing FIFA Soccer 12. Yes, the game is that awesome. With an improved defensive system, more realistic career mode and jaw–dropping graphics, FIFA Soccer 12 is my sports game of the year.

Anyone who knows me, knows I pride myself on defense in FIFA (must be the Italian in me). When I found out about the new and much more challenging defensive system known as “tactical defending,” I was excited to test out my skills.

Tactical defending places a greater emphasis on team defense (it’s about time), and if you want to complete a standing tackle, you’re going to have to do that yourself. Patience and timing are essential to a successful tackle — time it wrong, and the attacker will leave you in the dust. Warning: tactical defending is not for the faint of heart and if you grow tired of Messi running circles around your defense, FIFA gives you the option of going back to the old defensive system.

Career mode has definitely improved from previous versions. The youth academy has made a return, and you’re in charge of hiring scouts to find 14 and 15 year old prodigies for your youth academy. Watch them grow into world class footballers, and once they’re ready, sign them to your club.

Whether you decide to spend funds on the next Barcelona youth system, or don’t know the meaning of the concept, like Real Madrid, the youth academy is a pretty cool addition.

In the past, the only way you could sell a player was to actually list him “for sale.” Now, teams will make offers for players that you have no intention of selling.

In addition, players can now ask for transfer requests and I found this out the hard way. After scoring six goals in two matches, Arjen Robben decided to hand in his transfer request. Since he is Bayern Munich’s best player, I ignored his request. However, the board of directors sent me a message saying it was in the best interest of the club to part ways with Robben. I cried a little (just kidding).

I’ve yet to scratch the surface on how amazing this game is, but I think you get the picture. I’ll see you on the pitch. Arrivederci.
