It’s April — the last month before the semester is over (hoorah!) and the last time you’ll read our monthly fun facts until fall. You’ll survive.
For all you baseball fans, break out your jerseys, hats and foam fingers — professional baseball has officially begun. Hopefully the Florida Marlins (I mean, Miami Marlins) will take home the World Series this year.
April is also the start of spring cleaning (insert mothers everywhere going on a cleaning spree) and I bet students living on campus are happy they can leave their room a disgusting dirty mess for another month.
April Fool’s Day was two days ago, and maybe I pranked some of The Current staff (muahaha). Just kidding, guys! April also has holidays with far less disastrous consequences. These holidays include: Arbor Day, Passover, and Easter.
There’s a saying that goes, “April showers bring May flowers,” and I have to say it’s true. April is a gloomy month and not just because we need to break out our rain boots. Many wars started and ended in April. The Revolutionary War in America began on April 19, 1775, the Vietnam War ended on April 30, 1975, and the U.S. declared war on Germany in World War I on April 6, 1917.
Fortunately, many exciting things happened in April, too. The first pony express service began on April 3, 1860, Pocahontas married John Rolfe on April 5, 1614, and Henry Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home run record on April 8, 1974.
Many famous individuals were also born in April. Booker T. Washington was born on April 5, 1856, William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 and Samuel F. Morse was born on April 26, 1791. Also, if you’re on Twitter, you can give a birthday shout out today to: Amanda Bynes, Leona Lewis, Jennie Garth, Alec Baldwin, and Eddie Murphy.
