Lecture on present-day Black History Month

The beginnings of Black History Month will be explored in the discussion “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality” on Feb. 4, 3-4:40 p.m. in the ballroom of the Abraham S. Fischler School of Education, 1750 N.E. 167th St., North Miami Beach. Audience members will be engaged in discussion about the relevance of this celebration to present day education. Peter Caproni speaks about underground railroad

Professor Peter Caproni from the Center for Psychological Studies will discuss the role of his hometown in the fight for freedom from slavery in “Ripley Ohio: Gateway to Freedom on the Underground Railroad”. In addition to being a crucial stop on the railroad, Ripley also inspired characters in Harriet Beecher Stowe’s famous novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”. Augusto Soledade BrazzDance Dance Sampler

The Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences will host renowned South Florida dance company Augusto Soledade BrazzDance for a preview of their upcoming show, “Cordel,” on Feb. 5, noon to 1 p.m. “Cordel” is a work inspired by Argentine tango, American hip-hop, Brazilian popular Cordel literature and Kayala, based on the Brazilian folktale “How Night Came from the Sea.” BrazzDance will perform in the Performance Theater of the Don Taft University Center. “Death of A Bride” film and domestic violence awareness

NSU-American Association of University Women is sponsoring the showing of “Death of a Bride,” a film documenting the story of Gladys Ricart, murdered by her ex-boyfriend on her wedding day. After the film, Myhosi “Josie’ Ashton”, the creator of “The Bride March”, will speak about the battle against domestic violence. Both the movie and the lecture will be presented on Feb. 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Knight Auditorium of the Carl DeSantis Building. Discussion on God in the fight for freedom

On Feb. 1, 1-6pm, there will be an open discussion about the value of God and faith in the struggle for freedom from slavery. Song and prose depicting the “soul of black folk” will be presented, and soul food and refreshments will be served. This event, sponsored by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences, will be in the Knight Auditorium of the Carl DeSantis Building. Multidisciplinary Perspectives on sickle cell disease

NSU’s Center for Psychological Studies will host a discussion on the intricacies of caring for children with Sickle Cell Disease on Feb. 12 from noon to  1 p.m. The discussion will be in room 2045 of the Maltz Psychology Building, facilitated by Jessica Valenzuela, Cynthia Fletcher, and Carolyn Berger. “Thurgood Marshall: Before the Robe” by Charles Zelden

Professor Charles Zelden, author of “Thurgood Marshall: Race, Rights and the Struggle for a More Perfect Union”, will deliver a lecture on Justice Marshall’s life prior to his role in the Supreme Court. His lecture, sponsored by the Farquhar College of Arts and Sciences and the Shepard Broad Law Center, will take place on Feb.12 at 6 p.m. in the Shepard Broad Law Center. Hip Hop Master Class with Pablo Malco
