White substance found at NSU’s University Park Plaza
On Tuesday, Sept. 7, an unidentified white powder was found in an administrative office in the Uni-versity Park Plaza north campus. The building was evacuated and the hazardous materials team was called. As of Sept. 9, the substance had not been identified. However, Dave Dawson from the Office of University Relations said, “It wasn’t a biological substance that would cause any issue.”
Bob Dylan comes to NSU
Bob Dylan will play in the Don Taft University Center arena on Oct. 6. NSU students can purchase pre-sale tickets through the Don Taft U.C. box office for $27.50. Students must present their SharkCards to receive the pre-sale price. The event is open to the public.
University changes holiday schedule
Chancellor Ray Ferrero Jr. announced a change to the holiday schedule for the 2010-2011 academic year. NSU will now be open on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. The university will now be closed between Christmas and New Years. The new schedule does not apply to the Mailman Segal Institute or the University School.
Get involved through a new Student Affairs initiative
Representatives from Student Af-fairs’ Special Events and Projects have started a new initiative that they hope encourages students to get more involved on campus. The initiative is called “Nooners” and will be sporadically hosted at 12 p.m. in the Don Taft University Center pit area. The next session will be held on Sept. 15.
NSU Fraternity hosts 9/11 Candlelight Vigil
Lambda Theta Phi, a Latin fraternity on campus, hosted a candlelight vigil in the Commons Courtyard on Sept. 11 from 8:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. to remember the lives lost in the 9/11 terrorist attack. The students read poems, lit candles, shared memories and observed a moment of silence at 9:11 p.m.
Pastor cancels burning of Qurans
After repeatedly threatening to burn more than 200 Qurans on Sept. 11 to protest the building of a mosque near Ground Zero, Rev. Terry Jones cancelled his plans on The Today Show Saturday morning. Prior to the cancellation, the Gainesville pastor received death threats. President Barack Obama even reached out to the pastor in an ABC television interview urging him to reconsider. Jones wants to meet with the imam planning to build a mosque near Ground Zero to discuss the issue.
Peace Corps comes to NSU
As part of the “Pay it Forward” initiative, the Peace Corps will visit NSU on Sept. 14. The corps will discuss volunteer and work oppor-tunities for students at 12 p.m.in
the Carl DeSantis Building, Room1053. Refreshments will be provided.
Win at math with “Tools for Success”
The Office of Academic Services will host the second “Tools for Success” seminar on Sept. 14 in the Rosenthal Student Center, Room 200 at 12 p.m. The workshop will introduce math skills to students to facilitate their learning in class. The workshop will include lunch and is open to all undergraduate students with an NSU ID.
