Delta Pi Epsilon to host Mr. Fintastic contest

The women of Delta Phi Epsilon will host their sorority’s annual male pageant, dubbed Mr. Fintastic, on Sep. 29 at 6 p.m. in the Don Taft University Center Pit. The yearly event is held to raise awareness and funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

This year, the sorority women have given the event a theatrical theme presenting Cirque du DPHIE after drawing inspiration from the Cirque du Soleil entertainment company. The pageant will be comprised of four segments which allow the contestants to introduce themselves, test their knowledge of the sorority and present themed outfits and formal wear.

During each segment, buckets are passed through the audience to collect money while each contestant performs on stage. At the end of the contest, the contestant who raised the most money is crowned Mr. Fintastic.

It should be noted that two men will be recognized on that night, Mr. Fintastic and a deepher Dude. Delta Phi Epsilon president Alyssa Boltson explains that the deepher dude is chosen by the sorority sisters and is awarded to a man who has been exceptionally helpful throughout the event.

“Mr. Fintastic is the contestant that raises the most money toward cystic fibrosis and the deepher dude is voted on by our chapter and that’s just the guy that we think was supportive, put in a lot of effort and [someone] that we feel really goes along well with us,” said Boltson. “The deepher dude and Mr. Fintastic then become our go-to guys for the rest of the year when we do events like Community Fest.”

Boltson mentioned that this event is especially dear to the chapter’s cause after losing a sorority sister, Auriel Hall, in 2012 to complications of the disease. In fact, every year on the day before the male pageant, the chapter holds a vigil for her.

“When I first came to the chapter in 2014, a few of the older sisters had personally known her,” said Boltson. “Her brother Roman, actually had cystic fibrosis too and he was really involved with us … so instead of donating our money to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, we would donate directly to help pay for his medical bills. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years later.”

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, the disease causes the body to accumulate thick buildups of mucus in organs like the lungs. The disease also causes a buildup of bacteria that can result in infections, lung damage and respiratory failure.

“We normally do this activity where we say having cystic fibrosis is like having to breathe through a straw while you plugged your nose,” adds Bolston. “The air that you’re getting just from breathing through the straw is what it’s like for them.”

In addition to the money collected during the event, students can donate to the cause through sharkstore.ignitecx.com, NSU’s campaign management system.
