Freshman Ask: Where should I go for new food?

Freshman Ask is a section dedicated to answering the questions that run through every freshman’s head. The questions are answered by Schae Maynard, junior environmental science major. Maynard is from Trinidad and Tobago and this is her second year as an Orientation Coordinator at NSU. Stay tuned to see what questions your fellow freshman are asking and how you can make the most of your time during your undergraduate years. If you have any questions or want more information, stop by the Office of Orientation on the first floor of the Student Affairs Building, room 106.

Q: How do you guys not get tired of eating the same food on campus all the time? I’m so tired of eating at Flight Deck or Food Bar every day. What other options are there? What else would you suggest I do so I don’t starve to death? Lindsey, California

A: Hey Lindsey, I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m vegan so I definitely understand the food struggle. Here are some suggestions that might help you and put some spice in your life.

1/ Have a weekly family dinner:

Pick one night a week where you and your friends get together to prepare dinner. Each week, have someone choose a different cuisine and think of cool dishes to go along with it. For those of you who live in The Commons, fear not, as you can always head over to Goodwin and use the kitchen there. Let your inner Gordon Ramsey take control as you wipe up some wicked awesome treats for you and your squad.

2/Try new things on campus:

Venture out into the wildness. As much as we would like to believe that everything revolves around the UC, there are other options out there. Drop by and check out the options and if nothing there tickles your fancy try heading over to West End Deli in the Alvin Sherman Library. Besides having great and healthy options, they also have a chill atmosphere, where you can kick back and enjoy some you time. Monty’s Cafe is another amazing option to get you out of that Food Bar/Flight Deck rut. You can grab a bagel or just enjoy their coffee. Try mixing it up and who knows, you might find your new favorite spot.

3/ Stock up in your room:

By stocking up I don’t mean to go all out and become a super hoarder, but it might be a good idea to keep some of your favorite, quick fix meals in your room. That way, when you’re in the mood for something different you can pop that easy mac into the microwave and enjoy all the cheesy goodness. Just be sure to watch out for that fire alarm, cause ain’t nobody got time for that.

4/ Look into off-campus dining options and delivery services:

Who doesn’t love having their food brought to them? Each residential hall has the menus for some restaurants in the area that deliver. And yes, Chipotle delivers! If you’re looking to get off campus for a bit there are some restaurants within a mile or two that can satisfy those late night munchies. Let the google machine be your guide into the world of fast food or you can check out some of these options below:

  • For super-fast food: Wendy’s , Panda Express, and of course McDonald’s
  • For less fast food: BurgerFi and Blaze Pizza
  • For a sit down/ chill atmosphere: Flashback’s, Buca di beppo, Moe’s, Flanagan’s and Tijuana Taxi Co.
  • For bottomless feasting: Shinju Japanese Buffet (for $12.95, anything is possible)

5/ Discounts on discounts:

Your Shark Card does more than just get you into free events on campus. I bet you didn’t know that by showing your Shark Card at supporting restaurants you can receive a discount just for being a Shark! Bless all those establishments who recognize that we are struggling college students just trying to survive. At BurgerFi, Chick Fil-A (Davie North), Hungry Howie’s, Menchie’s, Pizza Loft, Shinju Japanese Buffet and Sweet Tomatoes, you can get a 15% discount.

Well there you have it! I hope these suggestions will help you see there is a whole new world of food waiting for you to explore. Be sure to write back to us and let us know if you uncover any new places that we should all check out.

If any of you out there have any questions you would like to be answered, be sure to shoot us a quick email at firstyear@nova.edu and you might just get your question featured.
