Mitt Romney and the 47%

Recently a recording of Governor Mitt Romney discussing the upcoming election at a $50,000-a-plate dinner surfaced on the internet. In this video, Romney openly admits he believes that 47 percent of Americans will not vote for him no matter what he says or does.

Romney said the 47 percent who will not vote for him consists of Americans dependent on government assistance, that pay no income tax, and those who believe the “Government’s job is to redistribute.” This ridged polarization of half of a country corrals everyone from the elderly living on Medicare and Social Security to students who depend on federal financial aid.

It’s not surprising that at a closed door $50,000-a-plate dinner Romney expressed his true beliefs regarding a large number of American citizens who he cannot understand, who struggle financially or depend on the government for some form of assistance. It’s easy to understand why 47 percent of Americans will not vote for Romney yet it’s impossible to understand how or why Romney writes off half a country on the basis that they do not pay income tax, rely on student loans, or need the government for some reason or another.

We know Romney was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and that his father made sure that every opportunity available was given to him; we also know that no matter what Romney says, he will never understand how it feels to be the child of a single mother, the difficulty of managing a household on a fixed and limited income — Yet this does not explain why Romney assumes that their votes are unwinnable, perhaps he is just too delusional to understand the real problems that many Americans face.

It seems that Romney lacks the political spirit to go forth and win the masses. If Romney truly believes that 47 percent of the country will not vote for him, then, 47 percent of the country will not vote for him.

By believing in such an absurd assumption, Romney automatically gives 47 percent of the country to President Obama, who thankfully refuses to write off American citizens based on their needs. It’s mystifying how any politician plans on winning a political race when they discount half of the countr.country. However, Romney seems to see nothing wrong with this and stands by his comments.

Romney’s comments, more than anything, are insulting. I, and several others, have our own personal reasons for not voting for Romney. We do not need to be lambasted as pathetic people dependent on the government. We take pride in our American system.  We know that it is not perfect, but we continuously seek to improve it.

Perhaps Romney knows how to improve our American system, but it should not be through criticism and insults. So until this presidential candidate tells us his plan, tells us without insults, we will listen as we always do, consider and decide on our own accord. You do not need to tell us your opinion, Governor Romney.
