Non-traditional sports on campus

Getting involved in sports is a great way to make friends on campus and stay fit. But let’s be real. Not all of us were cut out to be NCAA athletes, and some of us may not even want to participate in traditional sports like basketball or soccer. So if you’re not ready to join the varsity swim team just yet, or just the thought of running up and down the basketball courts makes you tired, don’t worry about missing out. NSU has fun alternative sports to help get everyone on campus up and moving.

Ping Pong
NSU’s RecWell is known for having a cardio deck, weightlifting platform, basketball courts and leisure pool, but many students don’t know that the RecWell also has two full-sized ping pong tables for members to use. The two tables are located on the first floor behind the stairwell to the weightlifting platform. Paddles and ping pong balls are provided by RecWelll. Students can ask for them at the front desk. The ping pong tables are available during RecWell’s normal hours of operation.

Air Hockey and Foosball
If you aren’t cut out for hockey or soccer, or simply don’t have the time to play, air hockey and foosball are the perfect tabletop alternatives. The Flight Deck has an air hockey table and a foosball table located next to the TV sitting area. Feel free to stop by Flight Deck during regular business hours and play a few rounds of air hockey in between socializing and watching the big game.

Beach Volleyball

One of the perks of going to NSU is proximity to tons of local beaches, but as college students, it’s hard to find time to enjoy all of the activities local beaches have to offer. Most of the time students spend at the beach is occupied by sprawling out on a towel with a textbook in hand to cram for their next exam. But one of NSU’s hidden gems can help bring some beach fun to campus. Located next to the Common’s Pagoda, NSU’s beach volleyball court is the perfect place to practice your serve or host a friendly game with your roommates after class. A full-size volleyball net and, of course, sand are provided, but students will need to bring their own volleyball in order to play.

Cornhole
The Flight Deck Backyard is not only the perfect place to study while soaking up some sunshine or grabbing a quick bite to eat with your friends, but it’s also the perfect place for a few games of cornhole. The classic tailgating game is often set up on the lawn for students to play while hanging out around the cabanas. Cornhole boards and beanbags will be provided by Campus Life and Student Engagement for students to use.
NSU has plenty of resources for students to get active and meet new people, and the options aren’t limited to this list. Take a walk around campus, and you might see some students playing Frisbee in the library quad or taking a run around the Gold Circle Lake. They’ll often be more than happy to let you join in. It just goes to show that you don’t need to be an athlete in order to enjoy sports, even if they are a little more non-traditional.
