NSU’s Orlando campus recognizes alumni

NSU’s regional campus in ORLANDO, FL recently started the “Recognizing Orlando Sharks” program to recognize students on their professional achievements.

To recognize the students, Campus Director for the Orlando Campus Michael Daniels said that he and the other staff members go to students’ work places to deliver congratulatory gifts and submit an announcement to the Orlando campus’s public relations specialist. The announcements are then published to the campus’s Facebook page and submitted to the online SharkBytes newsletter.

“We wanted to figure out a way to recognize some of our students and what they’re doing in the community,” Daniels said.

Daniels works with various assistants and office administrators to look through social media outlets to find out about students’ professional accomplishments. They plan on recognizing one student a month who lives in the Orlando area and is a current student or alumni.

Operations Administrator Christina Ortiz suggested the idea for the program a couple of weeks ago.

“We should have been acknowledging the students’ accomplishments a long time ago,” Daniels said. “We can’t make up for things we didn’t do in the past, but we can start [acknowledging the students] today.”

The first student to be recognized was NSU alumni Susan Deck, who recently received her Master of Science degree in cognitive behavior disorder and accepted a teaching position at Dover Shores Elementary School in Orlando. Daniels and Ortiz delivered flowers to Deck on her first day of teaching.

“We just need to acknowledge our NSU family and broadcast to the rest of NSU and the community what our students are doing,” Daniels said. “As you get further away from the [main] campus, it becomes more important to acknowledge who NSU is.”

Those who wish to nominate a student can contact the Orlando Campus at nsu-orlando@nova.edu or call 407-264-5601. For more information, contact Ortiz at 407-264-5602 or visit the Orlando campus’s Facebook page at facebook.com/nsuorlandocampus.
