Freshman Ask: Ways to relieve stress

Q: I know it’s pretty early in the semester but where can I go if I want to relax and de-stress from school work? I’m a Biology major so I don’t really have a lot of time because I’m taking five classes and it’s already becoming a bit too much. I just really want to know how I can find a way to handle everything without going crazy and actually having a life.

A: Hello Jessica, college can be a pretty stressful time and you’re not alone. I totally understand that you are worried about mountains of assignments, nights of crying yourself to sleep and nights where you probably won’t sleep at all. We have all been there, trust me. I’ll share with you some tips on how to de-stress and make the most out of your freshmen year.

  1. Explore the area: This is now super easy to do all thanks to SGA as the Shark Shuttle has expanded its routes just in time for this new academic year. So if you are searching for something to do on a Saturday night or if you just want a break from on campus activities you can check out the times for any of these destinations: Galleria Mall, Beach Place/ Downtown Fort Lauderdale, the Museum of Science and Discovery and Broward Mall. Times are available on the Nextbus app or you can call the Shark Shuttle’s main line at 954-556-6654.
  1. Sharks-on-the-Scene: Through the Office of Special Events and Projects NSU students have exclusive access to great deals for some pretty sweet activities and events. If you are the adventurous type, try paddle boarding. If you’re more of a music person, check out the latest concert tickets. Whether you go to out alone or with friends, it’s a great way to try something new, meet new people and make long lasting memories. So grab your swim trunks and your friends and try something you have never tried before. Who knows, you might actually be better at paddle boarding than you think.
  1. Do you even lift bro?: Hit the RecPlex and get your fitness on. Try that Zumba class your friend has been trying to get you to go to since the beginning of the semester, head to the weight room and cardio floor or chill at the pool with your bestie. If you are like me, why not grab some of your friends and have a billiards or foosball tournament. Have fun, but remember to not crush your opponents’ spirits too much with your awesome billiard techniques.
  1. Netflix: If all else fails, refer to the Netflix Starter Pack. You can make this into a weekly installment with your roommates, friends or floor mates. Each week pick a different TV series and marathon the life out of your Netflix.

These are just a few things to look into if you are trying to de-stress your life. These have worked for me and I’m still totally sane, well maybe not if you ask my friends. Anyway that’s all I have for now. Be sure to email us at orientation@nova.edu and let us know how these suggestions worked for you.
