Saving lives one fashion show at a time

NSU’s Delta Phi Epsilon sorority will host its 10th annual fashion show to raise money for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on March 20 at 7 p.m. in the Rose and Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center.

The sorority raised almost $6,000 at last year’s fashion show and hopes to raise $7,000 this year. The show will include representatives and survivors from the American Cancer Society, sorority members wearing outfits from local boutiques and a performance by the Sharkettes.

Delta Phi Epsilon Vice President of Programming Nicole Almeida, sophomore business administration major, said the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon hold the American Cancer Society close to their hearts.

“Various sisters have family members who are currently battling cancer and even some who are survivors,” she said. “As a student organization, it makes sense to raise awareness and make an impact on cancer research; together we are able to raise more money than we would alone.”

Delta Phi Epsilon Philanthropy Coordinator Jessica Rodriguez, freshman business administration major, said she hopes attendees are inspired during the event and feel a connection to the cause.

“At this point, there are very few people who aren’t affected by cancer and with having that connection, students will hopefully want to be a part of the cause and attend the fashion show,” she said.

Almeida said the sorority decided to put a different spin on the fashion show this year.

“The theme is ‘Deephers Take the Hamptons.’ We usually have a more casual theme, but since it’s our 10th annual show, we wanted to make it more formal,” she said. “Also, our models will not wear their letters, that way there is no singling out from other Greek organizations and everyone feels united.”

Rodriguez said it’s important to host benefit events like the fashion show because it brings students together for a special cause.

“When you bring a lot of people together in a joint effort to reach a certain goal, great things happen,” she said. “By coming to the event, students will hopefully see that Delta Phi Epsilon really puts their all into their philanthropies and that alone will encourage students to reach out, volunteer, donate and participate to a cause close to them.”

Almeida said most of the time, students think Greek events are just for Greeks, but this isn’t the case.

“I hope students will walk away with a positive experience, sharing their stories from the event, and happy they attended.”

The event is free and open to the public. VIP tickets will be sold for $20 and will include a reception with food and refreshments and front row seating. Attendees can donate at the event or prior to the event through gofundme.com/dphierelay2015.

Rodriguez said, “When students donate and show their support, they really help us to reach our goal: aiding the fight against cancer and ultimately finding a cure.”
