Soundbite: ‘Unless’ by Cescendo

Interested in independent music, emerging artists and new album releases? DJ Marie, music director at Radio X, will keep you updated every week in The Current on what’s new in the world of music. You can catch her on Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. on 88.5FM, bringing you new music you’re sure to love.

Let’s get one thing straight; if Crescendo would have been out and about in the late 80’s, their music would have surely made it onto Donnie Darko’s Halloween party mix.

This band has dark indie pop vibes and dreamy vocals with a hint of 80’s new wave and, at times, even a pinch of 90’s alternative. The trio from Los Angeles, Gregory, Olive and Jess, each sing different songs on the album, creating a beautiful, wide array of sounds throughout the twelve tracks.

“Unless” marks Crescendo’s second album release after their debut, “Lost Thoughts,” which was released in 2014. For old fans, “Unless” will not disappoint. For the most part, the sound in “Lost Thoughts” is consistent with “Unless,” except for the incorporation of more female vocals and heavier dream pop sound, but it’s an easy transition with a positive growth, nonetheless.

As always, you can tune in to your college radio station 88.5FM on Thursday nights for all sorts of new music, including Crescendo.

“Unless” is available on Spotify and Apple Music.
