After a three week expedition to Papua New Guinea, an island north of Australia, Jim Thomas, professor and researcher at the NSU Oceanographic Center’s National Coral Reef Institute, discovered new species of feather stars, sea slugs and amphipods — shrimp-like crustaceans.
NSU’s Oceanographic Center will use part of a $10 million block grant, received from BP in August, to research the Gulf of Mexico oil spills’s impact on marine ecosystems.
The City of Hollywood voted in favor of an ordinance that will help sea turtles walk away from the light.
On Sept. 27, NSU received a $2.87 million grant to expand opportunities for minority students. The university will use the money primarily to improve the success of Hispanic students at the Oceanographic Center.
