Thanksgiving is the holiday where we give thanks for all the things that we are grateful for, like living in a free country, having clean clothes, food and good sports.
Watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, being with family, as crazy as they can be sometimes, smelling the aroma of the turkey with all the special seasonings, and watching football and/or hockey is the standard in most American households on Thanksgiving Day.
Thanksgiving Day football traces back to the 1920 game where the Canton Bulldogs lost to the Akron Pros, 7-0.
That game showed Americans the potential of this violent, yet beloved sport, which would change the way Americans viewed sports.
There are traditionally two games played on Thanksgiving Day. However, in 2006, the NFL decided to add a third, featuring two teams battling for a play-off position.
This year, the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions will square off, the struggling Dallas Cowboys will host defending Super Bowl champions the New Orleans Saints, and the Cincinnati Bengals will play the New York Jets.
However, Thanksgiving is not all about football. Hockey, the long lost sport in American culture, is also played.
This year, the NHL will showcase a great pair of games featuring the Ottawa Senators and the Los Angeles Kings will host the Vancouver Canucks.
So, this Thanksgiving, when you think of all that you’re thankful for remember how lucky you are to have good sports.
