Intramural sports back in action

Now that the school year is back in full swing, the staff at campus recreation has begun the fall 2012 intramural sports season.

By early October, the RecPlex will accept registration for volleyball, softball, racquetball and golf. All events except for the golf tournament will be held Mondays through Thursdays between 7 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

Senior Danny Muggeo, legal studies major, said intramurals are a great way for students to participate in the activities they love without having to make a big time commitment.

The registration deadline for the golf tournament will be on Oct. 3, or when the maximum of 72 participants is reached. The pairs tournament will be held on Oct. 6 at the Pembroke Lakes Country Club with three different divisions; students, faculty and co-recreational. The cost to enter will be $25 for students and $35 for faculty members.

Softball registration opens Monday, Oct. 1 and closes Tuesday, Oct. 16 with a team participation fee of $50. There will be a mandatory captain’s meeting Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7:30 p.m. and the season starts on Monday, Oct. 22.

Mike Prociuk, assistant director of intramural sports and special events, said softball is very competitive and he expects to see 25-30 teams register for the season.

Another popular team sport is intramural volleyball, which opens registration on Oct. 1 and closes on Oct. 16 with the season beginning Monday, Oct. 22. There will be a mandatory captain’s meeting on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. to discuss the different rules and regulations. The cost to participate will be $50 per team, which is due before the start of the season.

Freshman Tiffany Kelly, sport and recreation management major, said, “I definitely plan on getting a team together and playing volleyball. I can already tell intramurals here at Nova are competitive and exciting so I can’t wait to start.”

The last intramural sport with an early October registration date is the racquetball tournament. The dates to register for the tournament are from Monday, Oct. 8 through Tuesday, Oct. 25. The tournament is a free event that will begin on Thursday, Oct. 27.

Any students more interested in watching the games than actually playing in the games may want to become intramural sports officials. Students interested in officiating will be required to fill out an application in Campus Recreation and will also be required to attend a sports officials clinic.

According to Prociuk the clinics for volleyball and softball will occur in mid-October at the conclusion of the intramural football season.

Intramural official Ryan Jerothe, sophomore business administration major, said “Anyone who loves sports should come out and be a ref. It’s a lot of fun and the people you will work with are great. We are like a big family.”

The fall 2012 intramural season will conclude with the 9-ball billiards and 3 on 3 basketball tournaments. Registration runs from Monday, Oct. 29 to Tuesday, Nov. 6. The billiards tournament will begin on Thursday, Nov. 8 and the basketball tournament will begin on Monday, Nov. 12.
