The Pre-Health Council hosted “Sponsor a Can” food drive from Oct. 22 to Nov. 2 and donated all collected goods to the Pantry of Broward Inc., a charity organization that supports senior citizens’ needs.
The drive was also a competition among seven campus organizations: — Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, Caribbean Student Association, Radio X, Pre-Pharmacy Society, Pre-Physicians Assistants, Pre-Medical Society, and the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Altogether, over 100 non-perishable and canned foods were collected.
President of Health Occupations Students of America Chanice Allen (H.O.S.A.), sophomore biology major and music minor, said, “The pantry was more than happy to receive our donations. It turns out that their stock of food is abnormally low for this time of the year.”
Allen said that all of the organizations were excited to take part and decorated their boxes to vie for donations as soon as possible. By the end of the drive, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority collected over 40 items in their donation box, making them the competition winners. The Pre-Health Council will recognize the sorority on a poster in the Don Taft University Center.
President of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Miranda Persaud, senior biology major, said, “We are proud of our NSU community for making an effort to come together and contribute to those who are less privileged. In this friendly competition, we are all winners for having shown support to our elders in need. We emphasized no donation is too small.”
Event Coordinator for H.O.S.A., Melissa Fils, junior biology major, said that the food drive is crucial not only to serve the community, but to give the NSU community an opportunity to engage in a rewarding activity.
Persaud said that giving back to the community is essential and giving back is simply a way to say ‘thank you’ to the elders in need.
Allen said, “This was a pretty good run for our first food drive on campus.”
Food drives are crucial to the Pantry of Broward’s functionality. The organization accepts all food donations and encourages volunteers.
