Nov. 15 will be another jam-packed day of events for Homecoming week.
First up — the NSU Sharks Basketball Pep Rally from noon to 1 p.m. in the Arena in the Don Taft University Center. Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will be introduced, as well as the 2013 Homecoming Court, and the Sharkettes dance team will perform.
Free food will be available at the rally and students will be invited to enter a drawing for a $1,000 book scholarship, the winner of which will be announced that night at the men’s basketball game.
Later that day, there will be a tailgate party in the Shark Circle from 4 to 6 p.m., with more free food and giveaways. Orlando Alzugaray, also known as Big O from The Big O Show on 640 Sports, will broadcast his sports show live from the tailgate party.
It all leads up to that night when the Arena in the Don Taft University Center will host the men’s basketball homecoming game in which the team will be pitted against number two nationally ranked West Liberty University.
The Hilltoppers of West Liberty will be looking to come into the Sharks home and spoil their home opener. Head Coach Gary Tuell will try to lead his run and gun offense past the national powerhouse that will be coming into his house. The Sharks have a young, talented team featuring four returning players along with five freshmen and two sophomore transfers.
Manager of Athletic Communications Eugene Canal said, “They are going to be a run and gun team; they are going to get out on fast breaks and shoot a lot of 3-pointers. They will defend and rebound well, but they want to run.”
During halftime, the Homecoming king and queen will be crowned. NSU is also hosting an alumni night during the men’s basketball game in the Club Room in the NSU Arena. All alumni attending the game will receive free admission and a chance to enter the “Welcome Home Alumni Contest” drawing for a gift package, including dinner for two at Buca di Beppo, admission for two to the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, a gift card to Duffy’s Sports Bar and Grill and more. All NSU alumni are encouraged to attend the alumni social at Duffy’s Sports Grill on University Drive immediately after the game.
Friday night’s game will be the final sporting event of homecoming week and NSU is looking to end it on a high note.
“It is going to be a quick-paced game,” said Canal.
