One doesn’t need a music major to appreciate performances by NSU’s Vocal Ensemble and Mako Band.
Those interested in NSU’s musical ensembles can attend the Department of Performing and Visual Arts’ Spring Music Concert on March 20 at 2 p.m. in the Don Taft University Center Performing Arts Theatre.
The Spring Music Concert is an annual fundraising event that includes the Vocal Ensemble, who perform traditional acapella choral works, and the Mako Band, who perform contemporary pop and original pieces.
Jessica Collado, visiting faculty in the Department of Performing and Visual Arts and director of the Mako Band, said that an event like this is important because it showcases that the department can help students gain musical experience.
Collado said that this year’s concert has something for everybody, as it appeals to several different musical genres.
“At this year’s concert, the Mako Band will not only be doing an original student work composed by one of the Mako band vocalists, but listeners can also look forward to songs by Coldplay, One Republic, Bastille, Paramore and Justin Bieber.”
While many of the members of the Vocal Ensemble and the Mako Band are music majors or minors, Collado encouraged students of all majors to check out the performances of the two music ensembles.
“We are always open to getting new members and students involved,” said Collado. “We are always seeking more majors and minors — there are many members [of the Mako Band and Vocal Ensemble] who are double majoring or minoring in some area of music or entertainment.”
All of the proceeds collected through ticket sales will go to the department to help fund events and purchase materials for the musicians.
“Although this is something that benefits the overall department and the members of the ensemble, it really is a good show with great talent and is a representation of just how talented the students at NSU really are,” said Collado.
Students can purchase tickets up until the day of the concert. Tickets are $5 with a Shark Card and $10 dollars without a Shark Card.
