It doesn’t have to be the end: Musicians and their comebacks

With so many well-known celebrities such as Ellie Goulding, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift taking a break from the music industry, it’s easy to wonder whether they’ll be able to return to the business.

Luckily for them, there have been other comeback attempts, with various degrees of success, by celebrities over the past decade alone.

Britney Spears
Nobody can dispute Spears’ impressive comeback. Over the years it seemed she would never again hit the level of popularity that she reached with “…Baby One More Time” and “(You Drive Me) Crazy.” However, she is officially back in the limelight with her latest album release “Glory.”

JoJo
Whether people noticed that it was indeed JoJo on the radio today or not is a moot point. Her songs “Too Little Too Late” and “Leave (Get Out)” were very popular in the teen pop genre during the 2000s. Due to label trouble, she went on hiatus for about 10 years before coming back on the radio with well-known songs “Save My Soul” and “When Love Hurts.”

Justin Bieber
Bieber also faded out of the spotlight for an extended amount of time. Upon his comeback in 2012, it became apparent that he left the stage to perfect his new sound and attitude. Rather than being the pre-teen heartthrob that sang “One Time” and “Love Me,” he became the teenage bad boy who sang “Boyfriend.” He then virtually disappeared again from 2012 until 2015, seeming only to be kept alive in the hearts of Beliebers and in reference to his relationship to pop sensation Selena Gomez. Nonetheless, he made a successful comeback with songs “Sorry,” “Love Yourself” and “What Do You Mean.”

Jesse McCartney
Anyone who went through grade school in the early 2000s can testify to the popularity of teen heartthrob McCartney. In addition to recording hit songs “Beautiful Soul” and “Because You Live,” he made appearances in multiple Disney shows, starred in “Summerland,” voiced Theodore in “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” and Roxas and Ventus in “Kingdom Hearts.” However, few people realized that he made a musical comeback in 2014 with the album “In Technicolor.” It had considerably more pop-funk influence than his earlier work. Nonetheless, it scored No. 7 on the Independent Albums Billboard Chart.

Evanescence
Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, it seemed that everyone could lose themselves in this alternative rock band’s songs. Songs like “Everybody’s Fool” and “Bring Me to Life” were on the iPods of thousands of teenagers at the height of the band’s fame. In 2015, Evanescence announced they were going on tour, but didn’t receive a lot of attention due to lead singer, Amy Lee, putting her focus on a solo career that is gaining popularity.

Hilary Duff
Duff was incredibly popular in her youth due to her role as Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel and her multiple hit albums. After having a child, she came back and her new songs “Sparks” and “My Kind” have been getting a lot of recognition.

Aly and AJ
Starring in the Disney Channel movie “Cow Belles,” Aly and AJ quickly became popular with Disney fans. They eventually broke away from Disney and pursued solo careers, Aly starring in the CW’s “Hellcats” and appearing in movies such as “Bandslam” and “Easy A,” and AJ pursuing a solo career in music. They also changed their band name to 78violet in order to pursue more of a rock sound. In 2015, they announced that they changed their band name back to Aly and AJ and are currently working on new music.

Shania Twain
Twain was incredibly popular for her songs “Any Man of Mine” and “That Don’t Impress Me Much” but went on a long break due to her divorce. She returned to the stage in 2012 and again in 2015. She has also said she is working on a new album.
