Movies to look out for this semester

A new semester and a new year are officially here. The 2018 movie season is filled with action, adventure, horror and follow-ups to previously successful movies. Here are some of the films to see this semester.

“Maze Runner: The Death Cure”

Hero and protagonist Thomas, played by Dylan O’Brien, will be leading the escaped Gladers on their final mission of finding the cure for the deadly disease known as the “Flare.” To complete their mission, the team will take on the deadliest maze yet. This will be the last movie within the trilogy, and will be released on Jan. 26.

“Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built “

When Sarah Winchester, played by Helen Mirren, has a sudden death in her family, she becomes convinced that she’s haunted by the souls of those who have perished from gun-related deaths. To protect herself, Winchester builds a mansion to help keep the spirits away. When psychiatrist Eric Price, played by Jason Clarke,  pays Winchester a visit, he discovers that Winchester’s prediction may be reality. Visit the mansion in theatres on Feb. 2.

“Black Panther”

After the death of his father, T’Challa — also known as Black Panther and played by Chadwick Boseman — returns to his home in Wakanda to take his position as king. He soon finds new challenges that await him on his quest, the biggest one being an old enemy who is a threat to T’Challa’s future and the world. Black Panther opens in theaters on Feb.16.

“Annihilation”

A biologist, played by Natalie Portman, will discover dangerous creatures in the wilderness as she searches for her missing husband while on a secret expedition. She will soon learn that the normal laws of nature don’t apply. The movie is based on the novel “Annihilation,” which is the first book within the “Southern Reach” trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer. “Annihilation” will be released on Feb. 23.

“Alpha”

Audiences will be taken back 20,000 years during the time of the Ice Age to follow the story of a young man, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, who awakens to find himself alone and left injured during the first hunt with his tribe. In his fight for survival, he develops an unexpected friendship with a lone wolf. The two must rely on each other to make it back home before winter strikes. “Alpha” comes out March 2.

“Red Sparrow”

Dominika Egorova, played by Jennifer Lawrence, is a ballerina who faces uncertainty when an injury leads to the end of her career. She soon starts a new mission in life when she enrolls in a secret intelligence service by attending Sparrow School. As she climbs in the ranks, her new life is questioned when a CIA agent tries to convince her that he is the only person that is trustworthy. “Red Sparrow” comes out March 2.

“A Wrinkle in Time”

A girl in high school named Meg Murry, played by Storm Reid, is sent on an adventure to rescue her gifted scientist father being held prisoner on another planet. To help her battle these wicked forces is her younger brother Charles, played by Deric McCabe, and her friend Calvin, played by Levi Miller. The adventure begins March 9.

“Midnight Sun”

Katie, played by Bella Thorne, is a 17-year-old girl who has been sheltered since childhood due to a rare disease that makes exposure to the sun a deadly situation. Times start to change when Katie meets Charlie, played by Patrick Schwarzenegger. The two will soon find themselves embarking on a summer romance. “Midnight Sun” comes out on March 23.

“Ready Player One”

In 2045, the only source of salvation is a virtual reality universe, called OASIS, created by James Halliday, who is played by Mark Rylance. When Halliday dies, he promises to pass on his fortune to the first person who can discover a digital Easter egg hidden in OASIS. To take on this dangerous challenge is Wade Watts, played by Tye Sheridan. This movie is based on the novel “Ready Player One” from Ernest Cline, and is set to release March 30.  

“X-Men: The New Mutants”

Five teenage mutants try to understand their new superpowers, and try to escape their past sins while being contained at a secret facility. This movie, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton and Maisie Williams, will be taking the X-Men movie franchise down a new path by incorporating more horror aspects. “X-Men: The New Mutants” comes out April 13.
