Men’s Basketball

On Wednesday Jan. 16, the Sharks faced off the Fighting Knights of Lynn University in a tight game, with the final score of 87-85. During the first half, junior Mikkel Kolstad had the first shot attempt of the game right before they grabbed a 5-0 lead over the Knights. The Sharks were still up, but Lynn earned six points, bringing the score to 8-6. Shortly after, the Knights were up by one, but a 9-0 run, capped by junior Mark Matthews with a three-pointer, bringing the score up to 28-22. A triple from sophomore Eddie Puisis gave the Sharks their largest lead of the half: 39-32. By the end of the half, Lynn was able to gain the lead with a score at the end of the half of 49-46. At the second half, the Sharks were able to get a two-point edge on Lynn, before the Knights went on a 12 point run, resulting in the largest lead of the game: 68-58. To respond to that, the Sharks went on an 11-point run of their own with two free throws from senior David Dennis. The lead kept switching between the Sharks and the Knights until the Matthews won the game for the Sharks when he was able to clean a missed lay-up in the final seconds of the game.

Women’s Basketball

On Jan. 16, the Sharks dominated the Knights with a final score of 100-57. The first half started with a very close battle with each team. Sophomore Claire McMahon scored the Sharks their first point with a layup, but the Knights came back with the lead. After Lynn had an 8-4 lead, the Sharks went on a 5-0 run to get the lead. The battle continued until junior Jordan Tully had a layup in the last 23 seconds of the first quarter, allowing the Sharks to pull ahead by one point with the score of 20-19. The start of the second quarter was a 10-2 run by the Sharks before taking the first double-digit lead of the game, with a score of 35-25. The Knights tried to come back, but the Sharks responded to this attempt by going on a 10-0 run. McMahon ended the first half with seconds left by scoring a 3-pointer, with a score of 54-33. The third quarter resulted with the Sharks outscoring the Knights 34-4, consisting of 12-0,11-0 and 9-0 runs, making the score at the end of the quarter 88-37. Less than three minutes into the last quarter, the Sharks took the game-high 57 point lead for a score of 97-40. The next 13 points were from the Knights but then a three-pointer by sophomore Hailey Conley brought the sharks to the ending score of 100-57.

Swimming

On Jan. 12, the men’s and women’s swim teams went up against the Florida Southern Moccasins. Both won, the men’s with a score of 132-130 and the women’s 200-62. The NSU Women’s A-team was comprised of senior Suzanne Afchain, junior Kaylee Gassen, junior Elizabeth Zubero and sophomore Jenna Johns. The women’s A-team was able to get the first win of the day for the Sharks in the 200 medley relay in 1:45.16. The men’s 200 medley A-team, composed of freshman Martin Hemminghyth, senior Cory Klemm, junior Magnus Poulsen, and sophomore Jonathan Yanello, was also able to take first with the time of 1:33.83. During the final event of the day, the women’s 400 freestyle A-team, composed of Johns, senior Caroline Oster, sophomore Emma Sundstedt and Gassen got first with a time of 3:33.06.
