Satellite clinic aims to provide readily available and easily accessible healthcare to students

NSU announced the opening of a new satellite clinic in partnership with the Student Medical Center in an email sent by the Office of Residential Life and Housing on March 2. The clinic is staffed by professionals from the Student Medical Center and is being housed in The Commons residential hall in room 135.

Sandi Scott-Holman, director of the NSU Student Medical Center, explained that one of the primary goals of this new clinic is to provide more accessible healthcare appointments to residential students.

“It was started because of the need that we’ve seen over the years to have something more in the center of campus to give a little more accessibility to the undergraduate students, particularly those who don’t have transportation. [For them to] even just get over to the [main] clinic, it is quite difficult,” said Scott-Holman.

There are goals to potentially open a new, larger clinic in the future. However, those plans are currently still being developed. The satellite clinic currently operates in The Commons 135, a former quad housing room that has been converted to two patient rooms and two offices. Additionally, at this point in time, its services are available to only undergraduate residential students.

The clinic offers the same services available in the Student Medical Center, including wellness and acute visits, female health and birth control appointments, immunizations and STD screenings, as well as COVID-19 tests.

“The pandemic was, of course, part of [opening the clinic]… [COVID-19] was a big part in us finally being able to get there, and now we have our foot in the door,” said Scott-Holman.

The clinic has been temporarily closed due to licensing delays, but Scott-Holman is hopeful that it will reopen within the coming weeks. Students are advised to monitor their email and clinic signage in regards to the status of the clinic, or call the number listed below. The student medical center in the Sanford L. Ziff building is still open.

The clinic will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with walk-in appointments available. According to the email, the Aetna student health insurance is accepted, along with “most insurance plans.” To schedule an appointment please call (954) 262-1262 or email nsustudentmed@nova.edu for more information.

The Student Medical Center’s new satellite clinic is equipped to handle cases pertaining or related to COVID-19. However, additional resources are as follows:

If a student is having any symptoms, they are advised to reach out to NSU’s Telehealth line at (954) 262-4100, where they will be connected to a physician who will review their symptoms and, if needed, schedule a COVID-19 test on campus. Additionally, students can email COVIDcase@nova.edu to provide updates on their symptoms and test results, even if the results are still pending, and to get assigned a COVID-19 case manager to oversee the situation and offer assistance, if necessary. Emailing COVIDcase will also immediately provide students with the Telehealth number, as well as links to employee and graduate/professional student report forms, the undergraduate student form and the form to report exposures. Students, staff and faculty can visit NSU’s dedicated website, www.nova.edu/coronavirus, for up to date information regarding COVID-19 at the university.
