April 13 – NY Rangers beat Toronto

In 1927, during the Stanley Cup Final in Maple Leaf Gardens, Toronto, the New York Rangers beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 in overtime for a 3-1 series win. This was also the first best-of-four finals series.

 

April 14 – NY Rangers at Stanley Cup Final

On this day in 1928, in only their second season in the National Hockey League (NHL), the New York Rangers beat the Montreal Maroons 2-1 for a 3-2 series win during the Stanley Cup Final. This event took place at the Montreal Forum in Quebec,Canada.

 

April 15 – U.S. wins gold medals

In 1896, the first modern Summer Olympic Games came to a close in Athens, Greece. The U.S. won 11 gold medals and Greece’s total medal count was 46. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had retroactively assigned gold, silver and bronze medals to the three best placed athletes in each event.

 

April 17 – Boxers box 42 rounds in one fight

On April 17, 1860, champion of England Tom Sayers and American John Heenan competed for a two hour and 27 minute draw near Farnborough, England. The police-stopped fight is acknowledged as the first world title flight.

 

April 19 – 1st Boston marathon

In 1897, the first Boston Marathon, the B.A.A. Road Race, was won by John J. McDermott in 2:55:10. This was considered the world’s oldest annual marathon inspired by success of the first marathon at the 1896 Summer Olympics.
