Shark Talent hosts annual showcase

Razor’s Edge Shark Talent will host their annual Shark Showcase on Oct. 1. The event is a talent showcase featuring different genres of the arts, including but not limited to dance, singing and visual art.

Nova Southeastern University’s official website describes the Razors Edge Shark Talent program as a, “program is for students who wish to use their artistic gifts to help create a more vibrant campus life at NSU.  The selection process is highly competitive and is based on audition or portfolio review, plus an audition and interview and students are required to major or minor in one area of the performing and visual arts.”

Cassidy Campanella, chair of the shark talent social media, said, “It’s a nice way for everyone to see everyone’s art and get people involved.”

The showcase this year will be virtual via zoom to stay within COVID-19 guidelines. Typically, the event is about an hour long and, in the past, has had about 20 submissions. All students at NSU are able to participate and send in a submission, it is not limited to students in Shark Talent.

“The shark showcase is a way to bridge the gap between shark talent and the rest of the arts community, we really want to involve anyone that wants to participate,” stated Campanella.

Up until last year this was a live event held in the performance theater and students would perform on stage and featured art would be in the entrance of the theater for people to see.

This showcase is a student run event put on by the shark showcase committee under the direction of their director Dan Gelbmann, director of Razors Edge Shark Talent and associate professor in the Halmos College of Arts and Sciences. However, the students on the committee collect all of the submissions and put together all of the videos and promotions.

Campanella believes students enjoy this event because it’s easy for them to get involved.

“it is a lower commitment because people are just submitting their art, it’s not like that have to come to rehearsal and they don’t have to audition so it’s an easy way for people that may be newer to performing or newer to getting into it…. the more art the better in our opinion,” said Campanella.
