Migrants allegedly torch tents in Slovenia
Migrants in Slovenia reportedly set fire to tents in a transit camp in Slovenia as a response to the poor treatment they’ve received. Witnesses reported that the migrants torched the tents as part of protest of the slow process of registration and movement to the Austrian border, as well as the lack of food, water and blankets.
Canada likely to legalize recreational marijuana
Prime minister-delegate Justin Trudeau, leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, won by majority in the Oct. 19 parliamentary election, and, as a result, there is widespread belief that under the new administration, pot legalization is very likely. Trudeau promised in a September interview that legalization would come shortly after he enters office, which will be in November. There is a Liberal Party majority in the lower house of parliament, guaranteeing passage of forthcoming legislation allowing the use of recreational marijuana. Analysts said that the legislation has a chance of being shot down in Canada’s Senate, which has a Conservative majority, but it usually does not obstruct legislation.
One person killed in U.S. fighter jet crash in England
U.S. and British officials said the pilot of a U.S. Marine Corps aircraft was killed after the plane crashed in eastern England. The plane was an F-18-C Hornet in Marine Attack Fighter Squadron 232 and one of six aircrafts flying from Bahrain to Miramar. No one else was injured.
Two Chinese diplomats, one injured, in Cebu restaurant shooting
A woman employed at the Chinese consulate and her husband were arrested after the deputy consul and the finance officer for the consulate were shot and killed in a private room in a restaurant on the island of Cebu in the Philippines, according to police and restaurant owner Stephen John Patero. The consul general, Song Ronghua, was shot in the neck but was stabilized. Sun Shen, deputy consul, was also shot in the neck, and Li Hui, finance officer, was shot in the head. Police reported that a handgun was confiscated at the scene.
Children burnt alive in caste violence, inciting Indian protest
Indian demonstrators blocked a highway to protest the deaths of two children, who were killed in an arson attack. The children, a toddler and a nine-month-old infant, died when arsonists set fire to their home in Faridabad in northern India near the capital, New Delhi. The parents of the children were injured, the mother reportedly critically injured. Three people were arrested, and security has been tightened due to the protests. The protestors called for the punishment of those responsible. The incident is part of a feud between the Dalit caste, formerly known as the “untouchables,” and the Rajput caste, which is higher up, despite laws forbidding caste discrimination.
Cuba announces shark protection plan
After two years of working with the Environmental Defense Fund, a U.S. environment group, Cuba will launch a long-term shark protection plan as part of the joint effort between the U.S. and Cuba to protect the Gulf of Mexico and Florida Straits. Cuba commits to recording sharks caught by fishing vessels and will also set stricter rules for shark fishing and the protection of nurseries.
Uber driver convicted for rape in India
A court official said Shiv Kumar Yadav was convicted of raping a 26-year-old female passenger in his taxi in New Delhi last December. Public prosecutor Atul Srivastava said Yadav was also convicted of criminal intimidation, kidnapping and endangering the victim’s life. Following the December incident, there were protests against sexual violence and for women’s safety. The government also banned app-based taxi services. Uber’s license to practice in India was revoked but was restored last July.
