How much “epicness” can be stuffed into 84 minutes? Director Josh Trank masters the art of suspense in “Chronicle,” a sci-fi thriller that takes the audience into the chaotic life of Andrew (Dane DeHaan), a neglected social outcast who forms an unlikely bromance-alliance with the most popular kid in school and his pseudo-philosophical cousin. Together, the trio uncovers a secret that inevitably leads them on the greatest yet saddest adventure of their lives.
I am in love with this movie. Really. High school kids with superhuman abilities? Pretty awesome stuff. The entire film is shot through video cameras in the hands of the cast. I know what you’re thinking — annoying shakey-cam action, right? It was actually superb. I am stunned at how smoothly the transitions were and how believable the footage was documented. Brilliant.
The characters were perfect. I felt as if I had met them and known them for years. In such a short amount of time, it was easy to grow to adore them. Steven (Michael B. Jordan), the popular kid, was charming and an excellent choice to be the comic relief. Matt (Alex Russel), Andrew’s cousin, and, ultimately, the hero of the story, embodied it well.
This film was heartfelt and action packed without being overbearing. Andrew basically “chronicles” his life through video recording as a means to escape his crappy life. However, as his powers grow, so does his darker side. Little by little, Andrew slips into a demented world created by his unfortunate circumstances, and his brotherhood with Steven and Matt slips away.
Have you ever been at war with a close friend? Imagine having superhuman telekinetic powers and having the ability to slam a building on top of their head. Yep, the action scenes are this bada**. The film kicks into supernatural high-gear.
If you enjoyed watching “Kick A**” or are a fan of the X-men, definitely check out this movie. It’s worth it. And by worth it, I mean buy-this-on-Blu-ray worth it. Watch it or watch out for that building above you.
