Through 19 games, the NSU women’s basketball team stands with a record of 11-8. With the second-best scoring defense in the conference, the team still looks to improve on both ends of the floor.
With the defense improving by nearly 14 points per game from last season, LeAnn Freeland, head coach, has been pleased with the team’s defensive effort. She said she’s impressed with how the team has embraced her defensive system.
“I’m expecting us to continue to improve and be more prepared in the next few games,” she said. “Our players have shown a real ability to follow game plans and execute on the defensive end in big game situations.”
Jada Buckner, senior guard, credited the coaching staff for the improved defense.
“Our coaches do a very good job of scouting the other team.” said Buckner. We know exactly what they’re going to do, and that’s fun. I enjoy calling out their plays and calling out what they’re going to do and being in position. We’ve really bought into the defensive system.”
Jasmine Wilkins, sophomore forward, prides herself in blocking shots, and she is ranked fourth in the conference in blocks per game (1.5). Wilkins believes she has grown as a player this past year.
“Especially with my footwork — being able to post-up stronger and bigger, I’ve learned a lot from last year to this year,” said Wilkins.
Freeland said the team still has room for improvement and she’s excited to see the team’s growth with the next few games.
“We certainly are not there yet,” she said. “We still can improve on both ends of the floor. Our coaches myself included, are very excited to see where we’re going to be.”
