NSU’s Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement is set to host the 2013 Winter Leadership Conference on Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Carl DeSantis Building. The event will consist of a series of workshop sessions on diversity, time management, effective advertising, team-building, and other topics to benefit student leaders.
The conference slogan is, “Your leadership begins here. Let your legacy set sail.” Its purpose is to provide students with the tools needed to succeed as leaders on campus and within the community.
Participants of the free conference will choose three 55-minute workshops to attend and lunch will be served in the Shepard Broad Law Center.
Jodi Jabs, graduate assistant for Leadership Development in the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, said, “When students attend the leadership conference, they are going to be able to work on their leadership skills. We have three different sessions filled with several different workshops that will offer a variety of information for the students.”
Noemi Bermudez, student assistant in the Office of Assessment and Student Engagement, said, “Students will be able to network with other student leaders like themselves. This unifies our campus, and opens up opportunities for collaboration between organizations and offices.”
Keynote speaker Lori Hart, recognized by Campus Activities Magazine as both “Speaker of the Year” and “Female Performer of the Year” in 2007, will conclude the conference. Hart visits about 100 campuses a year and has discussed a variety of topics, such as relationships, alcohol education, and fraternity and sorority life.
Jabs said, “Dr. Lori Hart will be talking to us about communication. Her energy and charisma are going to draw in all different types of leaders on campus.”
Lindsay Goldstein, junior education major, who serves as a committee member for the conference, said, “The leadership conference is an extremely impactful opportunity for all students to learn from knowledgeable keynote speaker and interactive informative sessions.”
Many different groups of students are encouraged to attend the event, including student leaders on campus and in the community; first year NSU students considering active involvement; and all students who need to sharpen their leadership skills to enter into graduate school or the workplace.
Bermudez said, “Most students have a lot going on, and sometimes it becomes difficult to keep things in perspective, and we begin to wear out. Leadership conferences get me excited, and solidify why I lead and what my goals are. I believe all current and upcoming student leaders could use some encouragement and resources to ‘lead out loud.’”
Jabs said, “I think leadership and diversity are important when you enter the workforce. When going into an interview, they are going to look as see what you did as a leader. They are going to want to know that you can lead without being told to do so.”

Once registered and confirmed, students must attend the Winter Conference. Although it’s a free event, students who fail to attend after registration will incur a fee of $25.00 to their bursar account.
