NSU’s Office of Residential Life and Housing to host Commons Horror Story

The Office of Residential Life and Housing will host a haunted house in Commons Residence Hall on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 8 to 10 p.m. This year the theme is Commons Horror Story, based on the FX series “American Horror Story.” The event is free to all NSU students.

Andrye Austin, assistant area coordinator for Commons and coordinator for the haunted house, said that the theme is a great “way to be creative and scare the community, but also bring them together with something that a lot of people watch.”

Commons Horror Story will feature four rooms based on seasons one through four of American Horror Story: Murder House, Asylum, Coven and Freak Show.

According to Austin, the theme was originally going to be Spooky Commons. However, after speaking with Justin Smith, the associate director of residence life and housing, the idea was revamped.

All 16 RAs said they are excited to be working on the event and many students have expressed interest in volunteering for the event. Eight of the RAs watch “American Horror Story.”

Nikhil Nagabandi, an RA in Commons, said, “It will be spooky because the RAs have put in a lot of great ideas and each room will have its own experience.”

Last year the event was done in suites, but this year the event will be done in the community rooms, which means there will be much more space to decorate. At the haunted house, students can expect to see different scary scenes from the show and creative displays in the community room.

“You’re not going to be able to tell that is where you go to do homework and study,” said Austin.

This year’s haunted house will be bigger and better than the previous houses, according to Austin. Check-in will be held in Commons 123, after which a tour guide will take students through each room. Each room will be approximately two to three minutes with plenty of scares per room, according to Austin, and students will be able to tour the rooms multiple times if they want.

Samir Nacer, an RA in Commons, said students should “get ready before entering.”

Students can visit Commons Horror Story anytime from 8 to 10 p.m. and there will be a photo booth for students to take spooky photos.
