Best wings in town

Whether you’re celebrating a football game, hosting a summer barbecue, or just simply craving some finger-licking appetizers, wings are your go-to dish. A lot of great wing spots are competing for the best sauce selection, social atmosphere and the overall satisfying title that their wings are in fact, the “best wings in town.” Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of trying every wing spot in Florida, but I did get a chance to try some of the best (and not so best) wing spots around town. Here are some places that made a lasting impression.

NSU Flight Deck Pub

Address: 3300 S. University Drive, Davie

Phone number: 954-262-5528

This popular NSU spot has a limited flavor selection when it comes to wings.

Naked, BBQ, Thai Sweet Chili, Buffalo and Sriracha are the only choices, but don’t let this small selection of sauces drive you away. The limited selection makes it even easier to choose a flavor and bask in saucy serendipity. The flavor that I’ve tasted, more than I’d like to admit, is the Thai Sweet Chili. This mixture is the epitome of everything I’d ever want from a wing — sweet, tangy with lots of meat on the bones. The Flight Deck Pub not only serves great food, but also provides a fun atmosphere. With students stopping by for a quick bite to eat, catching the latest games, or people watching in the cabanas outside, the Flight Deck is easily becoming one of the coolest places to hang on campus. The prices are considerably reasonable. The only downside is that they no longer have the 15 percent student discount it had when it originally opened last April. However, discount or not, the Flight Deck Pub is a place where students can hang out with their friends and enjoy an appetizing basket of wings.

Pines Blvd Pizza & Wings Parlor

Address: 6472 Pines Blvd. Pembroke Pines

Phone number: 954-589-0602

This small, New York family-owned wing spot, which opened in June, wasn’t very appealing at first glance. But I’m a firm believer in not judging a book by its cover, especially if that book has anything to do with food. Thankfully, I went with my gut instincts — literally, and decided to give this new place a try.

Though this pizza and wing spot may be small, their extensive menu certainly makes up for it.

New York style pizza, Italian calzones and Cuban sandwiches were some of the mouth-watering appetizers I had the pleasure of choosing from. The wide variety of flavors for their “World Famous Wings” is what caught my attention the most; the honey garlic flavor had my name all over it. Now I’ve had my fair share of honey garlic wings, but I’ve never, ever, had honey garlic wings like these. Enjoying these meaty, sweet but zesty wings had me forgetting all of my manners. Elbows were on the table, fingers were licked clean and not a care was given. My only concern was the wings. The only thing better than their wings was their customer service. To call this staff friendly would be an understatement. They personally know all of their regulars and prepare their food exactly how they like it. So if you’re an extra-sauce-on-the-side-with-no-extra-charge person, then this is your go-to place. Pines Blvd Pizza & Wing Parlor may be new in town, but their knocking out the competition one wing at a time.

Buffalo Wild Wings

Address: 11555 Pines Blvd. Pembroke Pines

Phone number: 954-499-1439

Free games, fun football atmosphere, and 60 cent wings are the reason Buffalo Wild Wings is the place to be on Tuesday and Thursday. From the moment I walked in, my mood was instantly lifted by the captivating energy in the jam-packed restaurant. With 53 flat screen TV’s, numerous framed football jerseys, and screaming fans, I knew right away that this wing spot would be one of my favorites. Narrowing my selection of flavors down to honey barbecue, Asian zing and lemon pepper was much harder than it seemed, especially with an extensive list of 22 sauces. You can even make your own flavor. As stated on the menu, if you name it, they’ll surely flavor it. Though some of the boneless chicken wings were a bit crunchy, the tasty sauces and 100 percent natural chicken certainly made up for it. The Asian Zing was the best out of the three; it had the perfect amount of sweet and spicy spices and wasn’t too overpowering. And the Lemon Pepper definitely hit the spot — seriously. The tanginess of the lemon hits you, but in a good way.

Aside from the yummy wings and the delectable dessert choices, including the dessert nachos, what really won me over was the outstanding customer service. My waitress was not only super friendly but she was super knowledgeable about all of the great deals going on. She was able to provide first-hand feedback on her favorites on the menu, and even allowed me to taste some of the sauces before I made my decision. Buffalo Wild Wings went above and beyond to exceed my expectations as a first-time guest, and now that I’ve forgiven myself for indulging in the dessert nachos, I’m officially ready for round two.

Bokampers Sports Bar & Grill

Address: 1280 S Pine Island Road, Plantation

Phone number: 954-533-7152

I’ve wanted to go to Bokampers for quite some time. This restaurant seemed to be the go-to place for any type of celebration- especially anything sports related. I had such high expectations for this sports bar, but unfortunately, my high expectations were met with poor service and poorly flavored wings.  Each time I tried to contact this restaurant to let them know I was reviewing them, I was either put on an everlasting hold or simply hung up on. Not a great first impression, especially for someone’s whose been yearning to try their infamous wings.

When I arrived I was vaguely introduced to my waitress and handed a late night menu without telling me what the specials were. I was at least hoping for a simple introduction to their wing flavors, maybe I was asking for too much. After scanning the menu, I decided to go with their signature Bo’s Wings, which are tossed in a combination of, medium, BBQ and Garlic sauces then grilled to perfection- or so they claimed. With a combination of three significant sauces I anticipated 10 slightly “wet” wings, what I got instead were 10 slightly “dry” wings. But, like I mentioned before, I’m not one to judge so, I gave these wings the benefit of the doubt.  However, my skeptical thoughts about these wings proved me right. Out of the three succulent sauces in the Bo’s Signature Wings, I tasted none of them. After the sixth wing, I completely forgot I ordered their specialty dish; I was convinced I was eating regular wings, from a mediocre restaurant. Lacking customer service and sauce on their wings, Bokampers Sports Bar & Grill proved that it is, certainly, not the best wing spot in town.

Sampling various wings spots around town was truly a saucy experiment. While most wing spots excelled in all areas, including exceptional customer service, a fun and inviting atmosphere and, of course, finger-licking wings, others unfortunately didn’t live up to the hype. The Flight Deck Pub offered the most convenient hang out spot, Buffalo Wild Wings provided the ideal football atmosphere, Pines Pizza & Wing Parlor supplied the best wings at the best price, and Bokampers simply didn’t measure up at all. With an overall rating of 4.5, Pines Pizza & Wings Parlor and Buffalo Wild Wings tie at earning the title of the “best wings in town.”
