Explore the volunteer fair

The Student Leadership and Civic Engagement Office will host the Volunteer Fair on Sept. 10 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Don Taft University Center atrium.

Around 20 affiliates from the South Florida community, including Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics, will have booths set up along the University Center Spine. Representatives from each volunteer organization will give out information and speak with students about various opportunities.

Lauren Soares, graduate assistant for SLCE, said the fair sets the tone for the semester by allowing students to get more involved.

“Right off the bat you can make connections with the different community affiliates,” she said.

In the past, the fair was focused on student attendance, but this year SLCE decided to change its marketing approach and focus on faculty and staff.

“We would love for NSU faculty to come and see the opportunities offered first-hand,” Soares said. “It will also give them a chance to engage with their students.”

NSU’s student organization, Community Action Using Student Empowerment (CAUSE), will also attend the fair.

CAUSE President Nicole Almeida, sophomore business administration major, said the members of CAUSE have the freedom of choosing what kind of service they are most interested in.

In the past year, NSU’s organizations reported 12,051.75 service hours, totaling $227,175.49 in economic impact on the community.

CAUSE will be having their first service trip on Sept. 20 and all students are invited. Participants can donate to the trip by bringing travel-sized items to the volunteer fair.

Almeida said that every organization on NSU’s campus that is involved in community service in some way. She encouraged the NSU community to dedicate a small portion of their time to visit the fair.

“Students who want to get involved and volunteer don’t have to wonder how,” Almeida said. “There are so many volunteer organizations at one place during one time, right in front of you. Students can see which affiliation they passionately connect with the most.”
