NSU to honor alumni during Homecoming

NSU Athletics and Alumni Relations will honor NSU alumni during Homecoming Week with several events.

On Nov. 13, NSU will salute 17 alumni, one from each college on campus, at the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Awards. The entire NSU community is invited to attend the formal ceremony from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Grande Oaks Golf Club. The entry fee is $60 per person, which includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music and valet parking.

Director of Alumni Relations RJ Stamper said the event will start with a pre-reception as people arrive at Grande Oaks. President George Hanbury and Vice President for Advancement and Community Relations Jennifer O’Flannery Anderson will speak and recognize each alumni.

“The alumni are excited to be recognized by NSU in this capacity because the Distinguished Achievement Award is the highest award a graduate from NSU can receive,” said Stamper. “They are also excited to be back on campus, to be with some of their former professors, and also to be a part of these homecoming activities.”

Among the recognized alumni are recording artist Griffin Anthony, who will be awarded for his achievements after graduating from the Farquhar College of Arts and Science in 2007. While at NSU, he also played on the baseball team.

On Nov. 14, the 17 graduates will be recognized as the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award recipients during halftime of the men’s game in the Arena at the Don Taft University Center.

“By recognizing these individuals in front of the study body, NSU is seeking to inform students of the greatness NSU has produced through these graduates as well as build a connection between students and alumni,” Stamper said.

Alumni Relations will also host a Club Room Social for the alumni during the two Homecoming basketball games. The first 150 alumni to RSVP will receive free admission, food and drinks. Alumni must email alumni@nova.edu or call 954-262-2118 to make reservations.

The men’s team will take the floor first at 4:30 p.m. against Johnson University. The women’s game will follow at 7 p.m. as they take on the University of Alabama, Huntsville. During halftime, of the women’s game, the 2014 Homecoming Court will be introduced and the winners will be announced, including a prince and princess for each undergraduate class and a homecoming king and queen.

Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing, Development and Fundraising Kim Carbo said, “Both games will feature giveaways, contests, and prizes. Admission is free to NSU students, faculty and staff with a valid SharkCard.”
