Break the Internet: Kim Kardashian Backtracking — Literally

Whether you’re a fan of hers or not, Kim Kardashian always manages to make herself the topic of conversation. From her four fabulous fashionable sisters, to her growing controversial family with Kanye West, the Kardashian is a household name, but not in a good way. Recently she has been making headlines for, ironically, the same reason she made headlines almost eight years ago: publicly showcasing her naked body.

While Kim K has her hand in many businesses including, clothing lines, makeup collections, perfumes and even apps, what she is most widely known for is her voluptuous curves. The Kardashian clan has always been a considerably famous family thanks to their dad Robert Kardashian, O.J Simpson’s lawyer, but they got their big break when a sex tape was released in 2007 featuring a young Kim K and Ray J, singer Brandy Norwood’s brother. Though a sex tape seems like an incredibly humiliating way to become famous, the Kardashians have managed to take this negative and make it a super positive.

While her family has succeeded in capitalizing off of Kim’s unfortunate upcoming, she has seemingly became the butt of all jokes — literally. Between her sex tape, countless dating fiascos and failed marriages, Kim Kardashian has easily branded herself as modern day Jezebel, so to speak. Calling her this is a matter of opinion, but what can’t be denied is that she has repeatedly used her bare body as a one way ticket to stardom.

After countless years of trying to revamp her racy image, Kim has paradoxically made the choice to pose completely nude for Paper magazine. She said in an interview with Australia’s 2DAY FMradio that she chose to pose nude because she feels extremely confident about her post-baby body and posing nude will be a “token” for her before she decides to take the journey into motherhood again. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for women confidently showcasing their bodies after giving birth. But posing nude for a publication the whole world will see, after you’ve stated several times that you want people to take you more seriously, seems a bit ironic, no?

To pose nude in any publication is to walk the very thin line between pornography and art, but it has been done. Demi Moore posed nude twice for Vanity Fair, once using body paint covering her entire body creating an image of a men’s tuxedo and another time baring her beautiful pregnant stomach using her arms to cover her lady parts. Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Tyra Banks and many others have all tastefully posed nude in magazines without receiving much backlash about their choice. But the difference between those nude publications and Kim’s nude publication is intent. Publications showing a women’s bare body focusing on her pregnant stomach are intended to evoke feelings of affection. Photographs showcasing a women’s naked body covered in paint are intended to show an appreciation for art. Photographs of a women posing completely naked, dressed only in a cynical smile, have no intent at all besides popularity, hence the hashtag #BreakTheInternet. For someone who claims that they’ve had to work “10 times harder” for people to see the real her, that image is transparent on Paper Magazine’s cover. Kim has continually shown us, in more ways than one, that her only talent is getting naked.

Kardashian has once again proved us right. Just as soon as we were starting to warm up to the idea that maybe her old ways have died down, and her image of a sex symbol has been transformed into a loving mother and devoted wife, she poses completely nude to remind us exactly how she got her big break. Kardashian may be an idol to porn stars, but to regular average day hardworking people like myself, she’s just a girl who, as her husband stated himself, became “a superstar from a home movie.”
