NSU Alvin Sherman Library hosts “Remembering Paradise Park”

The Alvin Sherman Library will host an event on Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. to reflect on the past issues African Americans faced regarding access to national recreational parks during the time of the Jim Crow laws. The walk is significant to Black History Month as it emphasizes the importance of equal opportunities for African Americans. The walk also highlights the significance of Silver Springs’ owners Carl Ray and Shorty Davidson, who opened a park downriver from the main spring, calling it “Paradise Park for Colored People.” The park allowed African American families to enjoy the outdoors and access Silver Springs just as other Americans did. Registration for the event is open to all until Feb. 15 at public.library.nova.edu/FHC. For more information, email libdev@nova.edu or call 954-262-4627.
