Shark Speak: With the rise of gun violence in the United States, what are some ways that NSU can help students feel safer?

“I think Nova could increase security and the blue light system between main campus and the Rolling Hills apartments. There is no public safety that patrols at Rolling Hills and since people walk to campus all the time, I think it would make it safer,” said Joscelyn Phillips, junior environmental science major

“NSU should consider the aspects of mental health when talking about gun control. I think most of these people that are committing these acts of violence are unstable and they need help. As for helping in crisis situations, I’d say having more armed security such as Davie police, rather than public safety or providing public safety more training or non-lethal weapons would be reassuring to me. Evacuation plans should be put in place. Right now, it would be a flood of people running for exits and that wouldn’t be safe,”  said Mitchell Moczygemba, junior sports management major

“Having public safety officers who are law enforcement trained would definitely be helpful. I think the NSU alerts should be something they send to us all anyway. I mean, they have all our emails in the system and the alerts shouldn’t be on a sign-up basis. That way, the whole population gets notification that something is going on. They should change the voice [in the suites and on outside speakers]. Right now, it’s more concerning than re-assuring. I panic when I hear it and it usually just a lightning notification,” said Justin Jackson, sophomore sports and recreation management major

“Improving educations on these subjects. Maybe more [information] for what students should do in an active shooter situation. Telling them what to do and where to go. I’m a freshman here and I haven’t been told what to do in that situation. All I know is if there is a fire alarm, to leave the building. My old school had these plans in place. Overall, more education and planning,” said Joseph Attallah, freshman biology major

“I would feel safer if teachers, professors and veterans who felt comfortable carrying guns were allowed to have guns on campus. Also, people who are trained properly should have mental evaluations [and background checks] to make sure they are safely and of sound mind [to carry on campus] would make me feel a lot safer. Keeping our open areas more restricted in the sense of knowing who is coming in and out [of our campus] would also help,” said Dayna Cyr-Parker, sophomore criminal justice and elementary education major
