Summer Spotlight: An interview with Vine & Branch Co.

Created by NSU Razor’s Edge Shark Cage student Charissa Bacon, a rising senior Marketing major with a minor in entrepreneurship, Vine & Branch Co. is a student-run business that produces both physical and digital planners intended to help kickstart your personal development and track your goals and daily priorities.

Where did you get the idea for Vine & Branch Co.?

“I have always been a type-A list maker. I love writing things down and organizing and I especially love planners. I created Vine & Branch Co. with the intent to help kickstart your personal development and track your goals and daily priorities. [The focus is] on being productive, doing the things that matter the most, and living with intention. We are all on a journey of becoming, and because I love seeing people win, I created this product as an essential tool to help you live a life that’s not busy, but fruitful.”

Where did the name Vine & Branch Co. come from?

“Vine & Branch Co. comes from John 15 in the Bible. In verse 5, Jesus is speaking, and he says, ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’ This is important to me because the goal isn’t to live a busy life that’s meaningless, the goal is to bear much fruit. The main goal of my planners is really to help other students live fruitful lives full of joy, success, and impact.”

How has your experience with Razor’s Edge Shark Cage been?

“I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be in Shark Cage. It’s a blessing that I got the chance to be [in] such a rare program. It was a new program when I got accepted and only a few students got the opportunity to run a business in Shark Cage. I’ve learned so much about owning and operating a small business from our program director, Cheryl Babcock, and we’ve had the wonderful opportunity to meet and gain insight from several high-level company executives through this program. I also had the incredible experience of traveling in the Caribbean on a cruise to visit small businesses around the islands and interview the business owners with Shark Cage.”

Where do you see this business going in the future?

“I have a vision Vine & Branch Co. will expand to become a stationery company that sells a variety of different types of notebooks, bullet journals, undated planners, to-do lists and anything else that helps with productivity, creativity and growth. I hope to grow a large e-commerce brand and sell on sites like Shopify. Later, I would love to see Vine & Branch Co. products on the shelves of Target and other major stores within the next several years.”

How can the planners be an asset to students for the upcoming school year?

“I believe handwritten memos will never go out of style. There is power in writing things down with pen and paper because they are more likely to manifest. Writing things down also helps with memory, retention and sparks creativity. With Vine & Branch Co. planners, students can set goals and intentions, write out practical tasks necessary to help them attain results, track their progress and reflect through a guided journal entry every month. Students who use a Vine & Branch Co. planner will not only find themselves more productive and effective, but also more mindful and purposeful. Instead of just being busy all the time, they’ll be more fruitful as they steward their time and energy toward cultivating the things that truly matter to them.”
