Soundbite: Ben Platt’s “Reverie”

2021 has been a big year for Tony award-winner Ben Platt. With the release of his new album “Reverie,” the announcement of his 2022 tour and his reprisal of the role of Evan Hansen in the film adaptation of the award winning musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” it’s clear that the American singer, songwriter and actor made the most of his time in quarantine.

Fans of Platt’s award-winning Broadway career often remember him best from his performance in the musical “Dear Evan Hansen,” and fans of Pitch Perfect or the Netflix drama “The Politician” may recognize the actor from his various film appearances. The 27-year old’s impressive list of accomplishments landed him on the Times 100 list of most influential people in the world in 2017 and gives him the ability to appeal to a wide audience.

Much like his acting career, Platt’s music draws on various genres and influences, making it easy to relate to and appreciate. In 2019, Platt made the leap from the Broadway stage to the recording studio, when he released his debut album “Sing With Me.” The album garnered rave reviews and left fans eager for future releases. Like always, Platt delivered, releasing his new album “Reverie” on Aug. 13 of this year. Two songs on the album, “Imagine” and “Happy to Be Sad” were released as singles before the album dropped, teasing fans with a taste of his new music.

Like his first album, “Reverie” showcases Platt’s unique musical style that blends pop instrumentals with an obvious theatrical undertone that nods to his Broadway background. Relying on lots of synthesizer, pop infused vocals and emotional tones, the album showcases Platt’s impressive range and Broadway-esque style.

“Reverie is here,” Platt wrote, announcing the album’s release on his Instagram account. “I’m so proud of this album and I love it deeply. I hope you will too.” And I definitely do. “Reverie” has been the soundtrack to my daily commutes and study sessions since it came out, and even on shuffle, it is sure to provide a relaxing yet emotional vibe to any situation.

My favorite track on the song list, “Dancing in my Childhood Bedroom,” evokes a poignant nostalgia for an easier time and creates a musical space for listeners to stop and take a much needed breath. At a time when the whole world is grasping desperately for what is left of our “normalcy” the feeling is easy to relate to.

Platt recently announced dates and location for his 2022 tour, including a performance in South Florida at the Hard Rock on Feb. 25, so mark your calendars and get ready for what is sure to be yet another show stopping performance.
