The impact of LGBTQ+ community on campus

The LGBTQ+ community holds great purpose when it comes to individuals expressing themselves and feeling comfortable in their own skin, and who they are inside and out. Nova Southeastern University students who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community can be more involved and present within the community at NSU because of events, organizations, and the Diversity Student Council.

There are resources and people all around campus willing to connect and contribute to providing a safe space for individuals to be their true authentic selves.

The organization UNION on campus is a huge outlet for the LGBTQ+ community. UNION consists of a group of people providing not only a safe and welcoming environment but allows students to join them in open arms to be their support system, allies and friends.

Hailee Delgado, president of UNION, is a junior who joined her sophomore year, when the organization was already established. Delgado’s involvement with the organization and others around her is something very inspirational to witness.

Delgado shares insights on what UNION entails.

“The purpose of Union is offering a safe space for queer people and people who identify with the LGBTQ+. We mainly do social events, social mixers and networking. We give students the opportunity to meet other like-minded people on campus in a safe space where you’re free to express your thoughts and opinions without feeling criticized due to your identity.”

UNION’s overall message helps guide self-love and freedom of expression in a place where NSU students can finally feel not only enough, but also loved for who they are.

Delgado also discusses the personal impact UNION has had on members who have joined the organization.

“We have had members who have been in households where they’re not always fully accepted. Especially those who are native to Broward County, and are not dorming, and are still living at home.” states Delgado. “We really try to create an atmosphere that resonates with inclusivity and in a space where students can come and not experience negative remarks and effects of some types of people who don’t necessarily agree with their sexuality. We try to offer to people a space away from some of the toxicity.” states Delgado.

This organization dedicates their time and helps elude a presence full of trust and love for people to come as who they are.

The Diversity Student Council is also a student-run organization, partnered with the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Office providing a safe space for the LGBTQ community. Their goal is to implement a unique and useful environment for students to come together and feel unified. They have multiple events, trainings and programs to communicate a positive place for everyone.

Some of the events they have done this year are the Halloween Drag Show, Coffee and Queries and Tye-Diversity. Many of these events were a hit, especially the Halloween Drag Show, where drag queens showcased their best selves. The performances, costumes and dramatic style made students fully engaged and excited to be a part of something so special.

Overall, the impact of the LGBTQ+ community is fairly represented at NSU, given the organizations that help spread awareness and allow for inclusion and diversity.
