Soundbite: The soul of “Silk Sonic”

The wait is finally over. “Silk Sonic” has released their debut album and it is better than we could have ever imagined. “An Evening With Silk Sonic” is the artistic work of singer-songwriters Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak. This super duo has topped the charts individually and are now working together to take us back in time with a retro-style R&B album.

“Silk Sonic Intro” is what sets the tone for the rest of the album. It embraces the era of the 70s while incorporating the funky soul of the late 60s. In the introduction, we are introduced to our renowned host Bootsy Collins who is an established musician and an innovator for the funk and soul genre.

The second track is their debut single that topped the charts for eighteen weeks, “Leave The Door Open.” It is captivating with a feeling of luxury through sensuality. Emphasis is placed on the voices of Bruno Mars and .Paak making it like an introduction to these two artists as a well-rounded duo.

We get into some funk with “Fly As Me.” .Paak is taking us back and giving us some stank and confidence exudes from this track. Listening to this makes you feel like an unstoppable force, it’s groovy and truthfully unironically makes you feel fly.

“After Last Night” will leave you speechless. This track is sensuality at its finest. Turn the lights down low and prepare yourself for a level of passion in music you’ve never felt before. The voices and the slow-paced tempo is the perfect blend of seduction.

Who knew being used and discarded could sound so beautiful? “Smokin Out The Window” is a painful experience of disloyalty and being taken advantage of described with elegance and ease. This piece includes small snippets of banter added by .Paak. Closer to the end of the track, he takes a moment to directly address this cheating woman in a funny and well-executed snippet.

This is classic Bruno Mars, the Bruno we know and love. “Put On A Smile” is a sad ballad that will hold the audience with an unforgiving grip. Regardless of whether you have personally experienced this heartache, you will feel the undeniable urge to cry. After listening to this ballad, you will feel as though you were putting on a fake smile while deteriorating from the agony of a past relationship.

Another blast from the past with “777.” There is so much funk that takes advantage of the feel-good beat. Rather than traditional singing, Mars and .Paak banter with the rhythm. They yell and give us their all while maintaining the music perfection of the album.

The second single released by Silk Sonic was “Skate.” This track is incredibly smooth, as the beat glides right through the ears and the voices metaphorically skate right over it. This track needs to be played at every roller rink in existence nonstop.

“Blast Off” is the final track off the album and it gives us the soft finish we all deserve. You are taken to a magical universe of effortless R&B. The guitar solo towards the middle of the track is a new touch that gives us the finish we were all waiting for.

Mars and .Paak are effortlessly talented and flaunt their skill through the entirety of this record. This album could easily be the album of the year as it caters to not only the older generations from the 60s and 70s but it keeps in touch with the current generation and their desire for the details from the past. It could eventually be a timeless piece with an ever-growing fanbase but only time will tell.

  1. I really liked your views on “Silk Sonic’s” debut album “An Evening With Silk Sonic”. This album was a very beautiful breathe of fresh air in the music industry. In 2021 we’ve had a lot of releases especially from the rap game. Artists like Kanye, Fetty Wap, Drake and more have released hit albums this year and while they have been nice to listen to I’ve just felt a need for something new and fresh. Silk Sonics debut album has been nothing but fire and I can’t wait for more music to listen to and more articles to read.
