There is more to February than just Valentine’s Day

Whenever you hear of February the first thing that probably comes to mind is Valentine’s Day. While Valentine’s Day is a meaningful celebration to share with loved ones, the month of February, even though it is the shortest month of the year, has a myriad of celebrations such as Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, National Banana Bread Day or Send a Card to a Friend Day. There is more to February than chocolate, roses and love poems.

While I could list random celebrations in February, there are other days’ worth celebrating or at least acknowledging, and some could even become fun traditions. For example, did you know that Feb. 2 is National Girls and Women in Sports Day? A day to motive and commemorate girls and women who in sports, and to acknowledge the equal representation of women in sports.

Other days to celebrate can easily become a tradition such as National Random Acts of Kindness Day, and while kindness to others is something that should be done every day, this can become the opportunity if you haven’t done a kind gesture to others in a while. One could easily do a small act of kindness for a stranger, or maybe your family members or people you haven’t talked to in a while. You could take part in National Cook a Sweet Potato Day. If you don’t know what to eat on Feb. 22, a sweet potato dish is the answer. There are multiple recipes that use sweet potato, and you can make this day even more memorable sharing the dish with others. If sweet potatoes are not your thing, then fly a kite on Feb. 8.

There is also my personal favorite, National Tell a Fairy Tale Day on Feb. 26, this can become the perfect day to let your imagination run wild. On this day you could gather your friends and family and take turns sharing your favorite fairy tales, and maybe it could turn into a bonfire and toast marshmallows. You could take the chance to brush up on your writing skills and create your own fairy tale story. If writing and storytelling is not your thing, you could always enjoy a movie marathon of classic fairytales, or maybe you could throw a fairy tale theme party with your friends

Celebrations in February are not all like Valentine’s Day where everyone knows about it, and you can find heart shaped decorations everywhere. You can celebrate something new every day. We shouldn’t limit ourselves to commemorating Valentine’s Day, which at times nobody celebrates or finds exciting. Every day in February can be a new day with a new celebration.
